5 transfer targets to follow Andre Schurrle to Chelsea

Chelsea yesterday officially wrapped up their first major signing of the summer since the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager at Stamford Bridge when 22-year-old German international Andre Schurrle was signed from Bayer Leverkusen on a five-year deal.

After a disappointing third placed finish in the Premier League last season, Blues supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are looking forward to the new campaign with a renewed sense of optimism with a title challenge this time round seeming a real possibility.

With Russian owner Roman Abramovich willing to put his hand into his large pockets to back Mourinho upon his return, Chelsea fans can expect more signings to be confirmed before the new season kicks off in August.

The former Real Madrid boss is desperately seeking a replacement for misfiring forward Fernando Torres and he wants a Didier Drogba-type powerful frontman. Jose also realises that the club need to add defensive strength to his Blues ranks and such players will be on his transfer wishlist after his emotional return to SW6.

XABI ALONSO
Speculation began about a possible move for Alonso as soon as Mourinho was confirmed as the Blues’ new manager.

The Real Madrid midfielder was one of few players who maintained good relations with Jose last season during a difficult campaign.

And with five years superb experience with Liverpool there is little doubt of the class he can bring to the Chelsea side.

With reports that contract talks have stalled in Madrid, Mourinho could be ready to pounce this summer.

LUKA MODRIC
Another Real Madrid player who could follow Mourinho to Chelsea is former Tottenham star Luka Modric.

Like Xabi Alonso, he has previous experience of the Premier League and also seems to get on with Mourinho despite his lack of first team chances last season.

The Croatian could be ready to end up his Spanish spell early and return to England where he can bloom as a world class midfielder once more.

Reports indicate that he would be inclined to a switch to Stamford Bridge this summer.

MARCO VAN GINKEL
The promising Netherlands Under-21 international could follow Andre Schurrle to Chelsea with a deal almost agreed with Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem.

The Blues have first refusal on the transfer given their agreement with the Dutch outfit and there seems no reason why the transfer wont progress this summer.

van Ginkel is highly rated in his homeland where he won ‘The Dutch Talent of the Year’ last season and also picked up his first cap for the senior Netherlands international team.

EDINSON CAVANI
The brilliant Uruguayan forward is the centre of a fierce transfer battle this summer.

Reports suggest that the Blues have now made a £50 million offer that will be accepted and Cavani could yet make the move to Stamford Bridge despite Andre Schurrle’s arrival.

Cavani himself has spoken in the past about wanting to play for Mourinho and he may get his chance next season.

ELIAQUIM MANGALA
The classy FC Porto defender has been repeatedly linked with move to Stamford Bridge since the return of Mourinho.

It’s easy to see why the Blues need a new centre half given John Terry’s age and Jose also seems to think that David Luiz is too much of a risk in defence.

Mourinho was reportedly monitoring the 22-year-old Frenchman who has just won his first senior cap while he was at Real Madrid and has continued this interest onto Chelsea, although the reported £30 million fee could put the club off.
