The spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, DSP Olabisi Clet-Ilobanafor, says the traditional `` stop and search’’ strategy adopted by the Force has been effective in apprehending criminals.
Clet-Ilobanafor said this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.
The police spokesperson, who was reacting to the presence of some policemen on the highways in the state, dismissed speculations that road blocks were returning.
She said road blocks involved the laying of obstacles on the highways to impede free flow of traffic, adding that the command had since complied with the ban on them.
Police personnel on patrol assignments are often permitted to conduct `` stop and search’’ operation on vehicles on the highways and this focuses on addressing crime.
There is a difference between police road block and stop and search operation which is aimed at protecting lives and properties.
We have been able to recover many stolen vehicles and apprehend criminals by such means,'' Clet-Ilobanafor said.
She called on residents of the state to support the police in the line of duty and assured that no one would be molested without cause.
NAN had observed visible police presence in areas such as Iyaganku, Bodija, Beere and Challenge areas of Ibadan metropolis, with policemen sighted scrutinising the particulars of vehicles.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Feb. 13, 2012, ordered the removal of all checkpoints across the country.
